José Sebastião e Silva - O Cientista e o Professor
José Sebastião e Silva, the most influential and original Portuguese mathematician of the 20th century, authored internationally renowned scientific works, many of which contributed to new lines of research, particularly in Functional Analysis. Throughout his career as a professor, he was always concerned with reflecting on what is taught and how it is taught. At both higher and non-higher education levels, he played a decisive role in the reformulation and renewal of mathematics education.
The University of Lisbon celebrated the centenary of its founding on December 12, 2014, with various initiatives in collaboration with other entities during the 2014/2015 academic year.
This traveling exhibition is composed of elements from the centenary exhibition of José Sebastião e Silva, organized by the University of Lisbon, and also includes a digital module. It is promoted in partnership with the Portuguese Mathematical Society.
Traveling exhibition organized by the SPM.

Matemática em Jogo
The CIÊNCIAS Department of Mathematics and the Centro Cultural de Belém presented the exhibition."Matemática em Jogo", which first took place at the CCB from November 3rd to December 3rd, 2006.
Now as a traveling exhibition, it can be requested to DCM.
The exhibition included a historical section exploring some of the strategy games, which do not involve chance, that have accompanied humanity from time immemorial to the present day.
Several ancient and notable examples of these games were presented, as well as some stone replicas of older games, which visitors could play. In addition to these, there were boards and various materials for playing other games presented, whose rules were available.
The exhibition concluded with a presentation of several computer-implemented games, highlighting the new contributions of computer technology to such an age-old activity. Furthermore, some unusual connections between mathematics and these games were emphasized, in addition to the simple proximity between strategic thinking and mathematical thinking.
There were also guided tours for schools and families, totaling 6939 visitors.

O Cálculo de Ontem e de Hoje
The exhibition aims to provide a journey through time, showcasing different calculation tools that humankind has developed to perform everyday calculations and free itself from time-consuming tasks. Its objective is to encourage reflection on the importance of quantification and the role of arithmetic in daily life, highlighting its presence in the technological objects we use.
Now as a traveling exhibition, it can be requested from DCM.

Pedras que Jogam
Games, besides being a source of pleasure, interest, and fascination throughout millennia and in all cultures, constitute a very serious cultural activity. In antiquity, for example, games were far from being intended for children. Playing was an adult activity. Only much later did games become intertwined with toys.
Now as a traveling exhibition, it can be requested from DCM.

Os Relógios de Sol e a Matemática
This traveling exhibition aims to highlight the role of mathematics in the construction of sundials. By photographically documenting some of the magnificent examples found in our country, it also intends to contribute to the dissemination of the rich national heritage of sundials and to raise awareness of the neglect to which many have been subjected over the last few decades. This exhibition is an initiative of the Projeto Matemática em Ação of the Centro de Matemática e Aplicações Fundamentais da Universidade de Lisboa in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.
Now as a traveling exhibition, it can be requested from the DCM.
