FERNÃO DE MAGALHÃES, PIONEER OF GLOBALIZATION

On October 21, 1520, the main objective of Fernão de Magalhães' voyage was fulfilled: to find a link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

By uniting oceans and connecting worlds, Fernão de Magalhães initiated the process of globalization.

Using excerpts from the diary of Antonio Pigafetta, an Italian sailor, geographer, and writer who traveled as a paying passenger on the Trinidad commanded by Fernão de Magalhães, this brochure aims to tell the story of this voyage.

Passeio da Ciência

The exhibition consists of a set of 30 panels, dedicated to the scientific research currently being carried out at Ciências ULisboa.

Each panel describes the essential activities of each research unit, with appropriate illustrations and a graphic design intended to make the whole thing visually appealing. Primarily aimed at the student population, it was designed to occupy a large space, inviting a journey through the scientific universe of our institution.

Crystals and Their Skeletons – An Online Exhibition

They have existed since the beginning of Earth and are ubiquitous in our lives.

Crystals are found in nature in many rocks and, in our daily lives, we deal with them in sugar or salt crystals, which we add to food, in digital watches and computer chips, in medicines and, literally, inside our bones.

At the Laboratório de Energética Molecular do Centro de Química Estrutural - FCUL (Molecular Energetics Laboratory of the Centre for Structural Chemistry - FCUL), they are mainly studied in crystals of organic molecules that are the basis of many dyes, agrochemicals and medicines.

In this context, several images of these materials have been collected over the last few years, which have now given rise to a virtual photographic exhibition created by C. Bernardes, entitled "Crystals and Their Skeletons", and available at http://mol2cryst.rd.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/

How was it calculated in the 1970s?

The pieces on display in Building C6 of Ciências ULisbon belonged to Centro de Cálculo Científico da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Scientific Computing Center of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) and were donated to Museu de Ciência da Universidade de Lisboa (Science Museum of the University of Lisbon) when they were no longer in use.

They are currently part of the collection of Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência - MUHNAC (National Museum of Natural History and Science).

They were included in the exhibition "O Cálculo de Ontem e de Hoje", which opened on the 100th anniversary of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.
