The Physical Sciences and Engineering invite us to discover the laws that explain the world and to go even further.
From the exploration of the Universe to the study of matter and energy, this area transforms curiosity into knowledge and innovation. The formalisms of Physics have driven advances ranging from artificial intelligence to economics, some distinguished with Nobel Prizes, showing how fundamental ideas from Physics can change society.
In the CIÊNCIAS program, training in Physics, Engineering Physics, Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics and Medical Physics is integrated into a dynamic and multidisciplinary research ecosystem, offering theoretical, computational, and experimental pathways, and multiple opportunities for scientific initiation and postgraduate training.
The campus is home to leading research centers covering areas such as particle physics, physics of matter and light, astrophysics, biomedical engineering, biophysics, and energy. They are, the LIP, Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics - Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas (LIP), the Centro de Física Teórica e Computacional (CFTC), the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA), the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (IBEB) and the Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI) and the Instituto Dom Luiz.
In this environment, advanced scientific instrumentation is developed, ranging from detectors for studying neutrinos and elementary particles, to atomic and matter physics, and instrumentation for large terrestrial observatories and space missions, contributing to the exploration and understanding of the Universe at all its scales.
