At our Faculty, Mathematical Sciences go far beyond education. With a universal, rigorous, and concise language, the concepts and tools of Mathematics promote abstract thinking while describing the universe around us.

From the equations of Quantum Physics and the Cosmos, to the encryption algorithms that protect all communications and transactions over the internet, the technological innovation of the last few decades has been based on advances in modern mathematics.

At CIÊNCIAS, research in Mathematics and Statistics enriches education and postgraduate training, creating a stimulating and multidisciplinary intellectual environment, building bridges with other sciences, and opening doors for students who pursue careers involving the world of finance, big data, informatics, or academia and education.

Research in this so-called "Queen of Sciences" is developed in two complementary Research Units. The Center for Mathematical Studies (CEMS.UL) promotes world-class research in classical areas such as Analysis, Algebra, and Geometry, as well as Operations Research applied to concrete everyday challenges. The Centre of Statistics and its Applications (CEAUL) is entirely dedicated to Probability and Statistics, developing fundamental and applied research with a strong interdisciplinary component and scientific and societal impact, particularly in the areas of health, environment, and economics.
