Earth Sciences constitute an interdisciplinary field that investigates the Planet from the integrated perspective of Earth Systems.
From the dynamics of its interior, essential for understanding earthquakes, volcanoes, or Plate Tectonics, to the external dynamics that shape the landscape through interactions with the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.
It studies past events and environments through the analysis of geological and fossil records, which help to understand and address the challenges of the present and the future.
It includes fundamental areas such as coastal and ocean dynamics, climate and climate change, the genesis and identification of mineral, water and energy resources, creating important knowledge for land use planning, assessment and mitigation of geological hazards and risks, and sustainability in the management and use of resources.
It interacts with engineering in public works projects, contributes to solutions for the energy transition, and is an area present in the fight against climate change and in the search for ways to build a sustainable society.
Equally fundamental are the means of remote observation and monitoring, and the tools that allow us to position and orient these means or measure the Planet on an unprecedented scale.
All of these dimensions are part of the CIÊNCIAS curriculum.
The Instituto Dom Luiz is an Associated Laboratory that brings together researchers who contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in this area in its multiple dimensions and interconnections, opening space for collaborations with centres that cross-reference research in domains that interface with Earth Sciences, such as the Marine and Environmental Sciences (MARE) and the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (CE3C).
