Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship Education

Ciências offers its students various Curricular Units (CU), divided into three educational cycles, in the areas of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Curricular Units

The Curricular Units (CU) linked to Entrepreneurship and Innovation aim to bring academic knowledge closer to society, promoting a culture of creativity, critical thinking, and entrepreneurial action throughout the three cycles of study. Through practical and collaborative methodologies, students are challenged to transform ideas into solutions with social, scientific, or economic impact.

1st cycle
Entrepreneurship at Ciências

The CU Entrepreneurship at Ciências aims to introduce bachelor's students to the fundamental concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation, stimulating creativity and confidence in their ability to generate solutions to real-world challenges.

Throughout the semester, students are invited to question beliefs associated with creativity and develop a business idea focused on solving a problem chosen by the group. The course does not require functional validation, prioritizing the development of skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and the application of innovation tools.

Ideally, working groups are formed by students from different courses and schools, promoting diversity of perspectives, the sharing of experiences, and interdisciplinarity—central elements of this course's pedagogical approach.

2nd cycle
Mindset Entrepreneur

The CU Entrepreneurial Mindset aims to raise awareness among master's students about the importance of connecting scientific knowledge to society, encouraging a proactive and impact-oriented approach.

Students are challenged to identify a relevant problem in a scientific or social context—based on scientific literature, lectures, academic experiences, or personal interests—and to develop a business idea or social intervention that addresses this challenge. While the solution does not need to be functional, the development of a prototype that allows for understanding and interaction with the target audience is a central element of the work.

Throughout the semester, groups design and execute a solution validation strategy, involving direct contact with potential users or clients, hypothesis testing, feedback collection, and reformulation of the initial proposal. Simultaneously, students are individually placed in situations that promote the development of communication, argumentation, and idea defense skills in demanding contexts.

2nd cycle
Business Project

The CU Business Project, taught and offered by ISCTE-IUL, is offered in the second semester to a limited number of master's students from Ciências ULisboa, promoting a joint training experience between two higher education institutions with complementary expertise in the scientific and management fields.

The course is based on mixed-gender group work between students from Ciências ULisboa and ISCTE-IUL, accompanied by a tutor. This interdisciplinary approach allows for the articulation of the development of scientifically based business ideas with aspects of management, strategic planning, and the initial structuring of a business plan.

Throughout the semester, students develop a complete business plan, integrating areas such as market analysis, operations and technology, organization and governance, financial accounting, and economic-financial evaluation. The work culminates in the public presentation of the projects at the end of the academic year, reinforcing communication, argumentation, and presentation skills in a professional context.

3rd cycle
Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The CU Innovation and Entrepreneurship, aimed at doctoral students, has as its main objective to support the framing of their research projects—or other ideas of interest—within a context of engagement with society and the market.

In a scenario of increasing competitiveness and scarcity of traditional funding, students are guided in developing strategies for financial validation and identifying alternative sources of investment. The work focuses on analyzing the potential impact of projects, as well as defining sustainability models and fundraising strategies.

Projects can be developed individually or in groups, and the course operates on a tutoring basis. Despite scheduled classes, students can opt for personalized guidance through individual sessions with professors. Participation is mandatory in formal presentations, where each student delivers a structured pitch of their project.
