Seminário do DF: "Magnetic Nanostructures For Spintronics Applications"

Abstract:

For most of the 20th century it was known that the electrons which are responsible for electrical current in electronic devises possess angular momentum, but no practical use has been made until last decades. Recently a novel approach which uses spin of the electron was developed. It differentiates electrical carriers into two different groups depending on projection of their spin onto a given quantization axis (‘up’ or ‘down’). Magnetic information transfer in spintronic nano devices is mediated by electron spins and could be re-arranged by demagnetization of the devise components. This talk is to introduce the field of spin electronics. A description of the relevant physical systems and length scales on which the spin effects become important will be made. Early devices will be described; recent developments will be illustrated.
