The aim of this project is to collect and analyze data gathered as a part of the curriculum work for Product Design, a second-year course for Licenciatura em Tecnologias de Informação at FCUL. Students will conduct interviews, focus groups or observational studies about how students organize and define work groups for academic projects in the context of an academic course. Target populations area: (i) students and staff at FCUL and (ii) students and staff at other Higher Education institutions. The collected data will be analyzed and used as a source for the development of prototypical solutions based on software.

The aim of this study is to collect information about the work flow used in the treatment of children with special needs. We want to find the type of patients who usually attend support centers, understand the workflow of the institution and identify the different phases of the therapy process, as well as the information registered by therapists about the therapy sessions.
We also want to understand how the communication among therapists and between therapists and caregivers (e.g. parents) is done and if they use any technological tools. The data collected will help the development of a digital platform to support therapists that work with children with special needs.

13/2018 – Study of human perception thresholds in imaging systems

A system is being developed as a tool for assessing the response of an individual performing certain operational tasks associated to image interpretation. Naval operational tasks that increase fatigue and mental workload will be simulated on the Ship Bridge Simulator of the Portuguese Naval Research Center. Two scenes will be presented to the operator through a radar display, who has to memorize contacts information. Complexity can be simulated by either adding more contacts, changing their dynamics and atmospheric conditions. Concurrently, a set of biophysical and physiologic data will be recorded using a Brain-Computer Interface and an Eye-Tracker device.

Whale watching and Climate change in islands is a PhD project, financed by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (PD/BD/135352/2017) which aims to assess how climate change will affect the whale watching activity in European islands. The main goal is to assess the biological and social-economic implications of climate change for the whale watching industry and provide adaptation options and policy pathways for the sustainability of the activity. For this purpose, interviews with whale watching companies will be undertaken to provide an overview of the key factors involved in the activity and the collection of empirical evidence on potential observed changes in the activity including climate.

11/2018 – Art for Adaptation – creative approaches for integrated responses to climate change

ART FOR ADAPTATION is a six-year postdoc project, financed by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (SFRH/BPD/115656/2016) which aims to develop new understandings of how artistic and creative practices can contribute to successful climate change adaptation. It will develop innovative qualitative and quantitative research on the relationship between art and climate change adaptation and transformation, based on the assumption that successful adaptation occurs through processes of transformation. In other words, successful adaptation involves more than strategies and interventions to tolerate warmer temperatures, adjust to drier or wetter conditions, or manage changes in disaster risk – it is also likely to involve the transformation of larger structures and systems (e.g., energy, financial, and social-technical systems), and possibly transformations in beliefs, values and worldviews such as perceptions of human-environment relationships, understandings of causality and attitudes towards individual and collective agency to affect change. The project aims to analyze how social transformations can be initiated using creative-participatory and artistic practices and based on the idea that sustainable transformations need to occur on a practical, political and personal level (O’Brien and Sygna, 2013, O’Brien, 2018). Through a mixed-method approach the potential of the applied practices to raise participants’ climate change awareness, agency, empowerment as well as long-lasting behavior change will be analyzed and evaluated.

10/2018 – Evaluation of an accessible multimodal SMS application

The aim of this research is to evaluate an SMS application that is endowed with the capability of recognizing mid-air gestures and speech. Specifically, we want to understand if it is accessible to people that suffer from different levels of visual impairments (partial or totally blind). The main goal is to understand if performing gestures (mid-air hand and finger gestures recognized by electromyography sensors) outside of the limited screen area of a smartphone will improve their performance (time and accuracy) when interacting with the mobile device.

9/2018 – Accessible Multimodal Remote Control

We are currently developing an assistive technology for visually impaired (VI) people aiming to improve interaction with smart TV applications. It was implemented a mobile application that is used as a remote for TV platforms which is capable of audio rendering the user interface of the TV applications and send commands back. VI users could already successfully navigate and control TV based applications with this prototype. However, this study aims to observe the use of new methods of input distributed between different modalities (e.g. touch gestures, mid-air gestures and speech) and report any improvements in interaction and task completion.

8/2018 – Media4WellBeing: media nos estados emocionais, bem-estar e saúde

The main objective of this project is to design and develop an interactive application that allows users to interact with audiovisual contents, taking the emotional states into account in order to improve the emotional awareness and aim for its regulation in terms of wellbeing. The contents which will be presented to the participants are images, music (of a wide variety of genres) and videos (music videos, talks, short films, motivational videos and movie trailers). The population of participants consists of a set of diverse adult people, interested in knowing their emotional and wellbeing changes and/or evolution in a determined period of time, when being in contact with an audiovisual content. The data we will use to get results will come from questionnaires, physiological sensors (ECG, EEG and EDA) and observation.

7/2018 – PROSEU: Prosumers for the Energy Union: mainstreaming active participation of citizens in the energy transition. H2020 funded project, Grant Agreement Number: 764056

PROSEU aims to enable the mainstreaming of the prosumer phenomenon into the European Energy Union. Prosumers are active energy users who both consume and produce renewable energy. Research focuses on collectives of prosumers and will investigate new business models, market regulations, infrastructural integration, technology scenarios and energy policies across Europe. The team will work together with Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Prosumer Initiatives (15 Living Labs), policymakers and other stakeholders from eight countries, to learn how prosumer communities, start-ups and businesses are dealing with their own challenges, and to determine what incentive structures will enable the mainstreaming of RES prosumerism.

We aim at the design and development of an interactive application that allows the access to audiovisual media in a way that contributes to the users’ sense of wellbeing, taking their emotional and cognitive states into account. At the current state of our research we want to reach a diverse audience and try to understand their motivations and preferences, so our population is composed by adult participants, that access audiovisual media, with no specific needs. The data will be obtained through surveys, sensors and observations.

1/2018 – THE HUMAN CENTROSOMAL TBCCD1 PROTEIN INTERACTION LANDSCAPE: THE KEY ROLE OF CENTROSOME POSITIONING IN CILIOPATHY DISORDERS

The human cells posses special filament structures that protrude from the cell surface and work life antennas for extracellular signals. These structures are known as cilia and their malfunction causes several complex diseases known as ciliopathies. Known clinical manifestations are infertely, obesity, brain and skeletal problems, blindness and kidney cysts. The number of identified ciliopathies is growing and our knowledge of them has been enormously helped by basic research. Cilia are anchored to cell membranes and rooted in a specialized structure named centriole. Our main goal with this proposal is to identify the mechanisms and signals required for the correct position of the centriole when cilia is going to be assembled, and how this mechanisms, when compromised, are related to ciliopathies development. For this we will study a network of proteins that interact with TBCCD1, a protein that is involved in correct position of the centriole, helping it to accomplish its role.

We want to take the experience and knowledge of accessibility experts into the design process of these features. With this study we want to collect the opinions of accessibility experts (as we already have users' perspective) about how the adaptation process should be designed into the mobile application.

5/2017 - UNDERSTANDING TECHNOLOGY USAGE, INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION NEEDS OF HOMELESS PEOPLE.

The aim of this study is to inform the design of novel technologies that facilitate the communication and information propagation among homeless people. We aim to collect data regarding the kind of technologies that are used and how, the current information and communication needs and access practices of the homeless, and how can they be supported by technology. We will gather this data from the volunteers working at Comunidade Vida e Paz through interviews, and directly from individuals in the process of abandoning homelessness with focus groups at Espaço Aberto ao Diálogo, a space of the same institution.

4/2017 – ACEITAÇÃO E PERSPECTIVAS DA UTILIZAÇÃO DE UM ROBOT NO APOIO A CUIDADORES DE PESSOAS COM DEMÊNCIA

MATY is an assistive robot aimed at supporting people with dementia and their caregivers in their daily lives. This robot aims at eliciting routines, supporting and incentivizing communication, and increasing the perceived safety of people with dementia. It does all that with a multisensory approach by resorting to visuals (a projector), audio (a microphone), and aromas (two aroma storages). In this study, we plan to assess the acceptance of an assistive robot by caregivers and people with dementia, as well as understanding the expectations and concerns regarding these technologies.

The aim of this study is to collect information about the daily activities of people with dementia, and the role of their caregivers. We are interested in understanding if they usually revisit the past (talk about past events, view old photos, among others), and, if so, how do they currently do it.The data will be further analyzed to compare information across different countries (e.g., from Portugal, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States of America) to devise a set of requirements that will guide and support the design and development of technologies to improve the quality of reminiscence therapy for people with dementia and their caregivers.
