The Mathematics Fair begins this Friday at the National Museum of Natural History and Sciences with demonstrations, lectures, and games designed to attract the interest of elementary and high school students to the various aspects of the so-called "science of sciences." The 12th edition of the event features nearly 50 activities that will enliven various spaces of the Museum between Friday and Saturday. Friday's activities are intended for school groups and require prior registration. Saturday's activities are geared towards families and the general public. The event includes the participation of researchers from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa).
The contribution of researchers who work or have worked at the Department of Mathematical Sciences of Ciências ULisboa will focus on five of the activities scheduled for the event. Friday's program includes a "Conversation with Mathematicians"; a session called "Magic in the Mathematical Garden: a place where Logic and Mystery meet"; and even "Mathematical Games and Puzzles."
On Saturday, “Mathematical Games and Puzzles” returns, but it's also worth noting the participation of researchers from Ciências ULisboa in the session addressing “The Importance of Statistics for Full Citizenship” and in the presentation of “Tantrix – Educational Games and Puzzles”.
The “Conversation with Mathematicians” features researchers Luís Baptista, Tiago Domingues, and Sofia Henriques, who will talk with various groups of students in several 15-minute sessions. “Magic in the Mathematical Garden: a place where Logic and Mystery meet” is moderated by Ana Rute Domingos, Ana Catarina Monteiro, and Simão Tavares. “Mathematical Games and Puzzles”, which takes place on Friday and Saturday, includes presentations of courses from Ciências ULisboa. On Saturday, Tiago A. Marques will present "The Importance of Statistics for Full Citizenship," while Carlos Florentino will participate in the presentation of "Tantrix - Educational Games and Puzzles."
