José Rebordão gives final lecture this Wednesday in tribute session

José Rebordão, professor in the Department of Physics, will give his final lecture this Wednesday, in a tribute session scheduled for the Grand Auditorium of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa). The lecture, due to begin at 16h00 on 27 May, is the culmination of the career of a researcher who began by taking his degree at Ciências ULisboa and went on to distinguish himself both in the field of research and in his participation in the day-to-day life of the academic community.

José Rebordão’s connection to Ciências ULisboa dates back to the 1970s, with the completion of his degree in Physics. In 1983 he completed his PhD at the University of Strasbourg, in France, and in 1992 he obtained the title of associate professor at Ciências ULisboa.
His academic CV also shows that he taught subjects including photonics, imaging, optics and lasers, and led research at the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA) in the areas of optical instrumentation for astronomy, space navigation for satellites and constellations, security, metrology and sensors.
Between 2009 and 2018, he was Vice Dean of Ciências ULisboa. He took on the role of Head of the Department of Physics between 2018 and 2024 and, in parallel, also chaired the Board of Directors of the FCiências.ID association (2017-2024).

Throughout hir career, he has participated in research projects for the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Southern Observatory or NATO and was rapporteur for two White Papers related to Space. He is a member of the Portuguese Physical Society (SPF), the Society of Photo Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), the Portuguese Society of Medical Laser (SPLM) and the Portuguese Metrology Society.
