The Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa) saw a huge influx of female ingenuity when it hosted one of the regional finals of Technovation Girls Portugal on 23 May. The ideas competition aimed at girls was organised by Happy Code and was attended by Conceição Freitas, Dean of Ciências ULisboa, and Alysson Bessani, head of the Department of Informatics at Ciências ULisboa. By the time it reached the regional finals, the competition had attracted 108 projects developed by girls aged between 8 and 18. Some of the teams that will go on to participate in the competition’s world semi-finals are expected to emerge from this regional final.

“Amidst innovative ideas, presentations full of purpose and plenty of team spirit, we had the opportunity to see the talent and creativity of these young women shine,” the event organisers noted on social media.

Technovation Girls featured teams of girls from various parts of the country
The teams qualifying for the global semi-finals are expected to be announced next week. The global semi-finals of this competition, which involves participants from over a hundred countries, are scheduled for 5 June. A week before the regional final held at Ciências ULisboa, a regional final also took place in Porto. The competition covers three age groups and aims to promote girls’ participation in the fields of technology and science, through the development of solutions that can address challenges in their respective communities.

During the regional finals, contestants of various ages had to present their projects and ideas to a panel of experts. The competition was open to teams of up to five girls, whose aim was to present projects related to the development of mobile apps and artificial intelligence.
