The scientific excellence of the Faculty of Sciences (Ciências ULisboa) continues to gain international recognition, making a decisive contribution to the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) retaining its position as the highest-ranked Portuguese institution in the National Taiwan University (NTU) Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities 2026.

In the latest edition of the ranking, ULisboa rose five places compared with the previous year, reaching 160th place worldwide. This result reflects the impact and quality of the research carried out across its schools, with Ciências ULisboa playing a particularly prominent role, especially in the field of Natural Sciences. The University also achieved 70th place globally in Animal and Plant Sciences, placing it among the top 100 institutions worldwide in this area.
The importance of Ciências ULisboa is also evident in the scientific fields in which ULisboa leads at the national level. Of the 17 disciplines in which the University ranks first among Portuguese institutions, the Faculty makes an active contribution to ten scientific domains: Environment and Ecology, Animal and Plant Sciences, Computer Science, Energy Engineering and Management, Environmental Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Space Science.

Across the results now released, ULisboa further strengthened its standing as a leading institution by ranking first nationally in four of the six broad scientific fields assessed by the ranking (Agriculture, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences), improving on its performance in the previous edition, in which it led in three fields.
Published annually since 2007 by the National Taiwan University (NTU), the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities is one of the leading international benchmarks for assessing universities’ scientific output, evaluating research performance through indicators of productivity, impact and research excellence.
