Monitoring the presence of a higher education institution in the media is today an essential strategic tool, in an increasingly competitive and fragmented media context. Public visibility and institutional reputation play a central role in affirming the university's mission. The dissemination of scientific knowledge is one of the fundamental pillars of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (CIÊNCIAS), and is enhanced by the mediation of the media, which amplifies relevant topics for the public sphere.
In the case of universities, this visibility entails increased responsibility. As institutions that produce and disseminate knowledge, it is our duty to ensure that our presence in the media is guided by scientific rigor, clarity in communication, and the ethical principles that govern academic activity. Public intervention should contribute to an informed debate, combating misinformation and promoting a critical understanding of scientific, social, and technological phenomena.
Thus, the systematic monitoring of media presence is not limited to a quantitative or reputational logic, but also constitutes an instrument for strategic reflection on the quality, relevance, and impact of the messages transmitted. By appealing to responsibility, rigor, and ethics in the relationship with the media, CIÊNCIAS reinforces its commitment to the public service of science, assuming its role as a qualified voice in the public sphere.
