On 26 January, an institutional visit took place at CERN – the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva, as part of the celebrations marking 40 years since Portugal became a Member State of CERN.

This symbolic moment of recognition and scientific cooperation was attended by a broad range of national representatives, including government officials, leaders of Portugal's main scientific and academic institutions, and representatives of the research community working in particle physics and related technological areas.

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa) was represented by a high-profile delegation, composed of Conceição Freitas, Dean of the Faculty, José Afonso, Vice Dean for Image and Communication, and Nuno Araújo, President of the Scientific Board and the Department of Physics.

The visit was attended by the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre, the Secretary of State for Science and Innovation, Helena Canhão, the President of ANI, António Grilo, and national scientific and institutional representatives.

The participation of Ciências ULisboa in this event reflects the work and research carried out at the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) and the Centre for Theoretical and Computational Physics (CFTC), the two Research and Development (R&D) Centres associated with the Faculty in the areas of Particle Physics and Theoretical Physics, respectively. These centres have played an important role in Portugal's participation in international scientific collaborations at CERN, as well as in the advanced training of researchers and students.

The programme included visits to CERN's experimental facilities.

Portugal's accession to CERN in January 1986 represented a decisive milestone for the development of physics in Portugal, promoting the integration of the national scientific community in projects of excellence and strengthening international cooperation, with a continued contribution from Ciências ULisboa and its associated R&D centres.
