Artificial Intelligence (AI) has already begun to transform various sectors of society, and judging by the "AI Summit AP: Empowering through Experimentation" event, public administration is no exception to this trend. The event, which took place last Thursday, featured the participation of Luís Correia, professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa) and researcher at the LASIGE Centre, who took the opportunity to highlight Portugal's pioneering role and the initiatives launched by the Instituto Nacional de Administração (INA) regarding AI.

Luís Correia represented Ciências ULisboa in one of the debates held at the AI Summit AP.

“INA has been doing commendable work with the AI XLab Program. It's a program that allows us to demonstrate the usefulness and viability of AI in diverse tasks across various state bodies, bringing together in each project a public administration body, a university partner, and an industrial partner. This initiative followed another equally important one, launched by INA called AI Business School AP, to provide training for public administration managers,” says Luís Correia.

AI XLab was designed to enable the development of pilot projects that promote the use of AI in public administration. Each of these projects starts with a proposal from a public administration body aimed at solving known problems or challenges. In addition to members of the public administration, each pilot project involves university and industrial partners.

Currently, Ciências ULisboa participates in the development of three ongoing pilot projects at AI XLab. After completion, each of these pilot projects could evolve into a conventional public administration service, should the final evaluation indicate this.

“This type of project allows public administration bodies to open new, more efficient, AI-based approaches to the activities they perform, while also allowing these bodies to calibrate expectations regarding the use of this technology in its current state,” concludes Luís Correia.
