Mathematics

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics

Those who arrive at the Mathematics Department driven by a vocation, the taste for discovery and problem-solving, find a working atmosphere that brings together teachers, students and collaborators at various levels.
Learning both science and problem-solving autonomy is achieved at the three levels,  three cycles, Batchelor's degree, Master’s degree and Doctorate degree. The collaboration of other departments ensures that horizons are widened to understand the crucial role of Mathematics in the other sciences.
In the first cycle, we offer broad-based training in the three main areas of Mathematics: Algebra, Analysis and Geometry.
In the master’s cycle, choices vary from Mathematics, with all its shades open to the vast world of research, to Mathematics Education and Mathematics for Finance.

The student will have occasion to see Mathematics as a means of building models for so-called real life problems such as health, transports and so on (Applied Mathematics), as well as providing the right language for highly abstract conjectures or results which have their greatest impact in Mathematics itself or in Theoretical Physics.

It can’t be said that the path is always easy but there is no lack of support: study rooms, more advanced colleagues willing to help those just starting out, classes taught by teachers with great experience who are also researchers and who can answer any question the students have, and a well-stocked library. In addition, our course coordinators pay close attention to any problems, we have excellent secretarial staff and, above all, we strive for good results. Without doubt, the best result is a solid training in Mathematics which enables the student to enter the job market without problems or to follow an academic or research career.

Most of the teaching staff belong to high-level multidisciplinary research centres and are available to supervise Master’s and Doctoral theses as well as post-doctoral positions.

Over the years, the Mathematics Department has organized a vast range of initiatives to popularize Mathematics, aimed not only at the public at large but especially at students from the final years of secondary school and the first years of the Batchelor's degree.  Other events have led us to contemplate the beauty of Mathematics in its historical development or its interaction with art.

Life in the Mathematics Department is full of challenges that will certainly be appreciated by those who love this science.

Welcome!
