Lisbon was awarded the European Green Capital 2020 Award on 21st June 2018. The distinction, which results from the assessment of a set of international experts on 12 indicators aimed at assessing sustainability in the city, was announced by the European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella.
This award is the recognition of the work that Lisbon has done over the past decade towards a greener and more people-friendly city. It is the first time that a southern European capital has won this distinction.
