Information for Exchange Students

For exchange students studying at Faculdade de Ciências no tuition fees will be requested*. Nevertheless, students may be charged a small tax on the same basis as local students for costs such as insurance, student unions and the use of study-related materials or equipment.

If you plan on studying at Faculdade de Ciências as a Free Mover, because there is no Agreement established between universities/institutions, you will have to pay a fee. On the other hand, if you intend to apply as a Full Degree student you need to know that Faculdade de Ciências has fixed tuition fees for all students following a full degree. These fees vary for each degree. For more details about the tuition fees and taxes that apply to the degree you are interested in please contact the responsible service.

*The exemption of tuition fees is only applicable to exchange students (non-Erasmus) if the Agreement establishes so.

Unfortunately Faculdade de Ciências does not provide study grants or scholarships, therefore you need to find other ways of funding your studies.

The continuous evaluation model (through written tests, spoken presentations, work groups or others) is decided by each course responsible Professor. Yet, the enrolment in the first and second calls (examination period) is mandatory and it is made through the student's user account.

Students can enroll in both examination dates and if they pass the first call exam, the second call will only be considered as grade improvement.

In the winter semester, exams take place between January and February, and in the summer semester, between June and July. For detailed information on each date you should always check the exams calendar available in our website.

The Portuguese grading system expresses itself in values between 0 and 20, being 10 the minimum grade for approval. Most of the times, tests, essays or exam grades appear in decimal values, such as 9,5. When such happens the final grade is rounded down if the decimal value is 0,4 or inferior, or rounded up if the decimal value is 0,5 or superior.

Even so, you should have in mind that the Professor may contemplate other elements, like class attendance and participation, to add to exams and essay grades, which can affect your final grade.

Academic Calendar

The academic year is divided into two semesters:

• Autumn/Winter semester, which starts during the 2nd or 3rd week of September and ends in the beginning of February;

• Spring/Summer semester, which starts during the midst of February and ends in July.
