The first application period for Master’s and Postgraduate degree programmes starts on the 5th of June 2019 and ends on the 12th of July 2019.. The second application period will run from the 12th to the 26th of August 2019. Some courses have their own specific application deadlines as well (please check the dates carefully).
The Faculty of Sciences’ website has all the relevant information regarding which courses are running as well as their respective course objectives, areas of specialisation, scientific coordinators, required qualifications, places, fees, general regulatory rules, contact information and responsible entities.
Applications must be completed online and sent with the following compulsory documents:
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Degree Diploma (except for final year bachelor’s students who will have a specific date to send off their degree certificate – conditional applications) 1 2 3;
- Grade Certificates 1 2 3 / Diploma Suplement;
- Certificate of Syllabus and Workload of the concluded subjects stamped and signed by the respective higher education institution (only for applicants whose degree or legal equivalent is from a foreign institution outside of European Union countries) 2 3;
- Declaration of recognition of respective higher education qualifications(s) and the foreign higher education institution, approved by the General Management of Higher Education - DGES (candidates whose Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is from a foreign institution outside of European Union countries);
- Citizenship Card / Identity Card 3;
- Cover Letter.
1 The documents must be certified by the Portuguese consular services or be presented with the Apostille (Hague Convention) by the competent authority of the state from which the documents originate.
2 Whenever the certificate(s) or diploma(s) are not originally published in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, they must be translated into one of these languages (legal translation).
3 Candidates who are not FCUL students must bring the original certificates in the week between 09th and 13th of September.
The candidate can send the comprehensive or summarised version of their CV provided that it mentions their professional and academic qualifications and training.
Candidates must not send the original copies of their certificate(s). However, during the enrolment process they must prove they have the original documents in person alongside the FCUL Postgraduate Studies Area, to confirm the authenticity of the scanned document(s) sent as part of the application.
It should refer clearly and succinctly the reasons for applying to the course.
Candidates whose Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is from a foreign institution (outside of the EU), must send all required Certificates/Diploma certified by the Portuguese consular services or be presented with the Apostille (Hague Convention) by the competent authority of the state from which the documents originate. Whenever the certificates or diploma are not originally published in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, they must be translated into one of these languages.
In the first application period, final year students can apply for all the courses they wish to attend as long as they complete their degree according to the dates set in ‘Conditional Applications’.
The whole procedure is completed online. You must fill in the form and submit it with the required documents duly scanned and uploaded.
Applications which do not have all the necessary documents attached to them will not be accepted. This excludes final year undergraduate students who are about to complete their degree, who have specific deadlines to submit their certificate or documentary evidence of completing their degree.
The application fee is a fixed fee of €40.00 for your first application. If you submit more than one application, each subsequent application will cost an additional €20.00.
The payment of the application fee must be done once you have received the corresponding email sent by the Postgraduate Studies Area. The payment can be made in two different ways:
- ATM reference;
- Bank transfer by ATMs, Internet or any Banking Agency.
If you intend to pay the application fee via bank transfer, then you must submit your proof of payment with the application.
Payments must be made during the respective application period and immediately after submitting it (payments will not be accepted during the 1st period to pay for applications submitted in the 2nd period).
Applications will not be accepted without the payment of the application fee - €40.00 for your first application. If you submit more than one application, each subsequent application will cost an additional €20.00.
The application fee is non-refundable. If a particular course is cancelled that year due to an insufficient amount of candidates, then the application fee will be reimbursed.
As stipulated in Despacho 7686/2014, accepted candidates in the 1st period will be subject to paying a deposit of €40.00 under penalty of losing their place on the course to which they have been accepted.
After the payment has been made, the enrolment fee is then paid when enrolling in the respective course.
Deadlines for the payment of the deposit:
Applicants admitted on the 1st period: until 5 working days after the result’s outcome.
In the eventuality that the course you have applied for is cancelled, the deposit will be reimbursed in full.

Candidates who submit more than one application and are accepted on to more than one course, must then inform the FCUL Postgraduate Studies Area (firstname.lastname@example.org) of which course they would like to enrol in.
