What are the Library and Extensions opening hours?
The C4 library is open on working days, 8 am to 7.30 pm.
During the exam period it is also open on Saturdays, from 9 am to 5 pm.
Extension - Biology: Mondays to Fridays, 10 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm.
Study Room: Mondays to Fridays, 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.
Building C6 Library, Extension 1: Mondays to Fridays, 10 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 4.30 pm.
Building C6 Library, Extension 2: Mondays to Fridays, 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm.

Who may use the FCUL libraries?
All internal and external users may use any of the libraries or departmental extensions for reading within the respective opening hours, in accordance with the library rules.
Who are the 'internal users'?
An internal user is anyone who holds a FCUL card (FCUL academic staff, researchers, scholarship holders, students and non-academic staff).
Who are the 'external users'?
An external user is anyone who needs to look up documents at the C4 library. External users must first request a visitor card at the security desk in Building C5. Identification documentation must be presented.
I'm a FCUL student who has just joined the Faculty. What do I need to do to be able to take out books from the library?
You'll have to go to the reception desk of one of our libraries and present your FCUL card and your ID card (or another valid identification document), so as to join the Libraries Computer System.
May I take a book home even though I am not a FCUL student or teacher?
No, you may not. Any person external to FCUL may consult documents and books at the library, provided he/she is identified as an external user. The home loan service is restricted to people who have a bond with the institution and possess a FCUL card.
You may, however, ask the library at your institution to contact FCUL for an Interlibrary Loan regarding the document you want.
How can I take out a book?
Only internal users may take out books or other documents on home loan. Present the document you wish to take out at the reception desk, and the assistant will inform you of its loan period.
You can only take out a book if you haven't got any overdue loan.
How many books can I take out and for how long?
The maximum number of books and loan days depends on your internal user category and what library the document is from (further information here).
Can I renew loans?
You may only renew a loan once. You may only apply for a renewal under the respective terms, and there cannot be any pending reservations.
When may I apply for a renewal?
You can only ask to renew your book loan if still within the loan date period.
How can I ask for a renewal?
You may only apply for a renewal at the library where you have taken out the book. You may apply in person at the reception desk, or by phone or e-mail (see contacts). You must provide the following information: book title and author, and the ID number you gave to register with the Libraries Computer System.
For how long may I renew a book?
Renewals are granted for the same time period as the original loan period.
How can I reserve a book?
You may only reserve documents which are not available in the library in person. Visit the reception desk of any FCUL library.
For how long may I reserve a book?
You have up to 5 working days to take out the book after the library has contacted you letting you know the book is available.
May I cancel a reservation?
Yes, you may. You may cancel reservations in person, or email the respective library. You must provide the ID number you gave to register with the Libraries Computer System. If you've reserved more than one book then also provide the book title(s) and name of author(s).
I'm a FCUL student/professor - how can I access documents from other libraries?
Internal users who want to access documents from another library (in Portugal or abroad) must apply for an Interlibrary Loan at a FCUL library.
I'm a FCUL library internal user - how can I apply for an Interlibrary Loan?
You may apply for an Interlibrary Loan either in person or by sending an e-mail to email@example.com. You must fill in and attach the Interlibrary Loan Application Form, which you can find on our webpage.
How can another library apply for a FCUL Library loan?
Any Portuguese or foreign library may apply for an Interlibrary Loan by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org, and providing information about the intended loan.
What is the loan period for an Interlibrary Loan?
The duration of an Interlibrary Loan is determined by the library which supplies the document.
If the supplying library is a FCUL library, then the loan period is:
- 10 days, if the applying library is in Lisbon;
- 15 days, if the applying library is on Portuguese territory;
- 30 days, if the applying library is outside Portugal.
Loan period starts counting as of the date the supplied document is received.
How much does an Interlibrary Loan cost?
The cost of an Interlibrary Loan is determined by the library which supplies the document. If the supplying library is a FCUL library, then the loan is free of charge for Portuguese libraries.
I've applied for an Interlibrary Loan at a FCUL Library - how will I know when the document is available?
The FCUL Library which has processed the Interlibrary Loan for you will contact you as soon as the document arrives. Please keep in mind that the loan period is determined by the supplying library and starts as of the date the document has been received by the FCUL Library.
How can I pick up or return an Interlibrary Loan document?
Internal user documents must always be picked up by the user in person.
Documents may be returned in person or by registered mail with acknowledgement of receipt.
Please note that an Interlibrary Loan period begins on the date a FCUL library receives the document and ends on the date the FCUL library registers its return.
May I renew an Interlibrary Loan?
You may apply for an Interlibrary Loan renewal at the respective library.
If you are an internal user, the FCUL Library will have to contact the supplying library to check if it authorises the renewal.
If the supplying library is a FCUL Library, you must always apply for a renewal before the due date, and it will only be authorised if the document has not yet been reserved by someone else.

What is the referencing support service?
Our Referencing support service means that any user may receive personalised support from a qualified library technician on how to use our library services, namely on carrying out personalised research on the Faculty catalogue and available databases.
How can I request Referencing support?
You may ask in person or by sending an e-mail to email@example.com. You must fill in and attach the required form, which you may find on our website.
