Climate extremes have been increasing in frequency, intensity and duration, representing one of the most obvious manifestations of changes in the climate system. Persistent heatwaves, prolonged droughts and episodes of extreme rainfall are having a growing – and often cascading – impact on ecosystems, infrastructure and economic activities.
