Storm Impact Forecast and Warning System in Australia: Lessons Learned and New Developments

Place

Room 1.3.14, Ciências ULisboa

Lecture3 June, 2026, 10:30 - 12:00

The impacts of coastal erosion associated with extreme storms represent a growing challenge for coastal communities around the world.

In this lecture, Professor Ian Turner will present the latest developments of the Australian coastal erosion early warning and forecasting system, one of the most advanced initiatives currently operating at an international level.
The presentation will address the integration between numerical modelling, coastal monitoring, and operational forecasting to anticipate large-scale coastal impacts, as well as the main lessons learned in the development of this system over recent years. New technological advances and future applications to support coastal management and civil protection will also be discussed.

About the Speaker:

  • Professor at University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia and visiting professor at Universidade TU Delft, Netherlands.

  • International specialist in coastal erosion, beach monitoring and early warning systems

  • Named in The Australian as Australia’s top researcher in Marine & Ocean Engineering (2020)
