The Department of Biology invites you to participate in the Human Biology and Environment seminar on the topic: Main pests and diseases of forests in Portugal!
By: Luís Bonifácio, Researcher, Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária (INIAV)
More than a third of mainland Portugal is covered by forest, mainly (more than 70%) composed of two native species, the cork oak (Quercus suber) and the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), and one exotic species, the eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) in industrial plantations for the production of cellulose pulp. Each of these forest species is affected by various biotic and abiotic weakening factors, with forest fires being the most widely reported in the media, although pests and diseases also cause considerable mortality. The INIAV Plant Health team is dedicated to studying the behaviour of the main pests and diseases (native, introduced or emerging) and developing innovative control methods and disseminating them to national authorities, forestry associations and landowners. This seminar will present the most serious health problems for each of the main forest species in Portugal and the strategies available for their control.
