The recent amendment to the Legal Framework for Higher Education Institutions, following the publication of Law No. 32/2026 of 20 July, requires higher education institutions to adopt new statutes within one year.
In accordance with the law, the new Statutes of the University of Lisbon must be approved by a Statutory Assembly comprising the Rector, elected representatives of tenured academic staff and researchers, students, and technical, specialist and management staff, as well as co-opted external figures.
Considering the election and co-optation of the members of the Statutory Assembly, the General Council approved the corresponding regulations, following which the Rector signed the order setting out the convening of the Assembly and the electoral timetable.
The electoral process, which formally began on 23 September, will culminate on 24 and 25 November 2026 with the holding of the election.
