Abstract: Nuclear medicine plays a crucial role in the differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. A variety of radiopharmaceuticals are available to assess distinct brain functions or detect abnormal protein deposits associated with neurodegeneration. In this seminar, I will present examples of these radiopharmaceuticals and their specific application to dementia-type and Parkinsonism-type disorders. I will also present standard and advanced quantification techniques used in clinical and research settings, highlighting their potential to increase diagnostic accuracy beyond traditional visual qualitative evaluation.

Short bio: Francisco Oliveira is a researcher at the Nuclear Medicine-Radiopharmacology clinical service and research Lab of the Champalimaud Foundation. He holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Porto, a master's in Computational Methods from the University of Porto, and a five-year degree in Mathematics from the University of Minho. His work focuses on medical image processing, analysis, and quantification, with a special interest in neuroimaging and oncology. His expertise includes PET and SPECT imaging, compartmental analysis, computer-aided diagnosis, statistics, and machine learning.
