48 Hours of Estimating Animal Abundance

Place

Ciências ULisboa

Workshop11 June, 2026

Estimating animal abundance in the wild is a central theme in research on ecology, conservation and environmental management – yet it remains one of the greatest methodological challenges in this field. Factors such as detectability, experimental design, biased observations and spatial variability shape how population abundances are estimated and interpreted.

The workshop “48 hours of Estimating Animal Abundance” brings together students, researchers and professionals in the field for two days of lectures, short courses and discussions, focusing on the methods behind estimating animal abundance in the wild. In addition to the conference programme, one of the highlights will be the practical ‘workshop’, where participants will be able to discuss analytical challenges, explore new methodological approaches and, time permitting, work directly on their own data with researchers at the forefront of quantitative ecology. Organised by CEAUL – the Centre of Statistics and its Applications – and taking place at CIÊNCIAS on 11 and 12 June, the event is designed for those interested in quantitative ecology, conservation, sampling methods, or ecological data analysis – from early-career to established researchers seeking to exchange ideas and strengthen collaborations.
