What is a Digital Mobile Key?

The Digital Mobile Key (CMD) is an authentication and digital signature method certified by the Portuguese State that allows users to access various public and private online services and sign digital documents using a single login. This mechanism links a mobile phone number to a Portuguese citizen’s civil identification number, or to a foreign citizen’s passport number or residence permit/card number.

CMD is a simple and secure authentication method that provides access to public administration websites and those of certain private entities. It relies on two security factors:

  • A PIN chosen by the citizen;

  • A temporary numeric security code, received by SMS or email, which is valid for each authentication request.
