The Ethics Committee of Ciências (CEC) is a body endowed with technical and scientific independence, of an advisory nature, comprising eleven members from a range of disciplines appointed by the Faculty Dean, whose remit is to support the academic community in ensuring compliance with and promoting high ethical standards in teaching, research and cooperation, in strict observance of the principle of the dignity and integrity of the human person and their fundamental rights.
The CEC is responsible for issuing opinions and recommendations on the ethical aspects of research proposals involving human subjects. In principle, research based exclusively on secondary data, publicly available information or historical documents does not require a prior opinion from the CEC.
Where research proposals involve animals, the Animal Welfare Body of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ORBEA) must be consulted.
