Venue

Lisbon is the westernmost capital city in Europe and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Throughout the ages, the Atlantic Ocean has exerted a strong pull on Portugal and its people. It has played a key role in the country's history. namely its overseas expansion - known as Voyages of Discovery - in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, dating back to pre-Roman times. It is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It was European City of Culture in 1994, and in 1998 it organised Expo '98, the last World Exposition of the 20th century.

Lisbon has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers. The typical summer season lasts about six months, from May to October, inviting many outdoor activities and a relaxed lifestyle.

The conference will be held at the University of Lisbon. This was originally founded by King Dinis in 1290, but moved permanently to Coimbra in 1537. The present University of Lisbon was re-founded in 1911. It has now merged with the Technical University of Lisbon, with the aim of becoming a player on the global higher education stage. The main campus is located in the Campo Grande area of northern Lisbon, It is less than 2 km from Lisbon Airport, well served by public transport including two metro lines, and within walking distance of many hotels.
